Thunderbird has a massive array of Add-ons extensions you can install for it.  We'll list some of the best and most useful here and to get you started we'll show you how to install the English-UK dictionary so that you have an integrated spell-checker which will highlight your spelling miss-steaks as you type.

7) Thunderbird will warn you that its about to install add-on software (as add-ons can be written by general public you must be sure that the software is ok to use, but anything listed on the official Thunderbird download site will be ok to use

8) Thunderbird will have to be restarted for the add-on to take effect.

9) When you've closed and restarted Thunderbird you go to Tools menu and select Options to configure thunderbird to use your new dictionary (Note: these steps might be unnceccesary as the dictionary install might have already automatically set this for you)

10)  You will now have thunderbird's options dialog window open
  • Click Composition button.
  • Click Spelling tab.
  • Click Enable spell check as you type checkbox (if not already ticked)
  • Select English/United Kingdom from language drop down.
  • Click OK button to use the new dictionary.

You can now install any add-on you wish into Thunderbird by following the steps above, only difference is in step 3 you go to either the Extensions or Themes section and save that add-on to the desktop.

The following is a list of extensions we recommend you install
  • Lightning Calendar Extension
A superb calendar application that integrates into thunderbird.  At some point we will also integrate this into your webmail so that any appointments, tasks, notes etc that you enter with Lightning will automatically be synchronised on the server.
  • Contacts Sidebar
Adds an outlook style contacts address book to your sidebar
  • Quote Collapse
Allows you to show/hide quotes in emails
  • Signature Switch
Useful if you want to quickly change from a work email signature to a personal one.
  • Remove Duplicate Messages
Scans your mail folders and finds and removes duplicates
  • Google Calendar Provider
If you have a google calendar then this allows the Thunderbird Lightning to hook into google's calendar and display and add events to it, e.g. the Outer Hebrides Events Calendar
  • Purge
Only useful if you use IMAP for downloading your mail.  IMAP doesn't deletedd messages on server it flags them as deleted but in thunderbird you have to go to file menu and select compact folders to physically delete them.  This gives you a convenient toolbar button to perfrom that action.
There are plenty add-ons we haven't mentioned here, e.g. QuickText will save you a lot time if a lot of your email replies are similar, e.g. if you're an ebay seller or run a B&B.  Read this article for information on QuickText to see if it suits your needs
